We love to introduce children to the world of classical music. Our Family Music Faire is specially designed to make classical music enjoyable and accessible to kids. We start with a short engaging concert, followed by a lunch (free!) and faire activities.

This year’s concert will feature Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, a story told through music. Each of the characters in the story is represented by an instrument in the orchestra. The little bird twitters through the flute, and the smooth clarinet is the slinking cat. The French horns are the menacing wolf. It’s a great way to introduce children to the world of classical music, and the instruments of the symphony orchestra. Local actors will also be adding life to the storytelling. Find out how engaging classical music can be.

The Faire is full of fun activities. Kids can explore the many activity booths and say hello to the characters from the show. Musicians will give demonstrations and talk about the instruments that they play. Kids can learn about a violin or a trumpet, then pick it up and try it themselves.

Activities include:

  • Hands-on instrument demonstrations
  • Meet the characters area – actors from Peter and the Wolf will greet and take pictures
  • Face Painting
  • Coloring
  • Musical storytelling (New this year: in both English and Spanish)
  • Singing Booth hosted by the MIM Chorale
  • Movement Booth – dance to the music!
  • A mobile health clinic will be available to anyone from 12-3pm (generously offered by Western Sierra Nevada Mobile Health Clinic)
  • …and more!

This year we’re dreaming big and inviting communities all over Nevada County and beyond to attend this special event. We’re connecting with public schools, private schools, and preschools to share in this special event. Our Family Concert is a great way for your kids to learn about music – and maybe you’ll even learn something too.

This event is made possible by a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation.
