Hank Weston – County Supervisor – District 4
William H. “Hank” Weston was elected in 2007 to serve as the District 4 Supervisor for Nevada County. He served for over 45 years with a number of California fire protection agencies. Hank was hired by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), initially as a seasonal firefighter, and was promoted through the ranks to eventually become CDF Unit Chief of Nevada, Yuba, Placer, Sierra and Sutter Counties. Following 36 years with CDF, Hank served as Fire Chief for Grass Valley City Fire Department from 1997 to 2006. During his career, Hank’s administrative positions have included a wealth of leadership and management duties, and he has been a member and officer of several professional and community organizations. Additionally, Hank holds a lifetime Community College teaching credential and is a retired peace officer with Advanced POST certification. Hank and his wife, Kandy, live in the Lake Wildwood community. Married 46 years, they have two grown daughters.
Laura Abbey Brown – Executive Director, Excellence in Education Foundation
Laura Abbey Brown has served as the Executive Director for the Tahoe Truckee Excellence in Education Foundation since 2004. In 2012, Laura led a coalition of public and private agencies to develop a regional plan to address third-grade reading proficiency which resulted in the National Civic League designating the Tahoe Truckee region an All-America City. Prior to her time with Excellence in Education, Laura worked in Marketing for 10 years for both Northstar Resort and Creative Concepts Media. She received her BS from UC Davis in Behavioral Sciences. Outside of work, Laura is busy with her family which includes three young children and her husband Jeff. Laura and Jeff have lived in Truckee for over 20 years and are active members of the Tahoe Truckee community.
Michael Heggarty, Chair – Director of Health and Human Services
Michael has a BA in Psychology from University of California at Davis, and a MA in Psychology from Radford University. He is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and for the past 3 years worked as the Director of Behavioral Health for Nevada County, California. Michael has 31 years of experience working in a variety of community mental health settings in California, Tennessee, and Virginia. Before transitioning to mental health administration, Michael was a direct service provider for mentally ill adults, children, and older adults; individuals with developmental disabilities, and individuals with substance abuse disorders. Michael lives with his wife in Nevada City, along with quite a few dogs and cats. He has 2 grown children residing in California.
Jill Blake – Director, Public Health
Shar Johns – Nevada County Superintendent of Schools – Associate Superintendent of Educational Services
Shar Johns has been an educator for over 25 years. In 2013 she was selected to serve as the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools Associate Superintendent for Educational Services where she oversees a variety of programs including: Early Childhood Education, Foster Youth Services, Student Support Services, Alternative Education, safety and school climate, curriculum and instruction, school accountability, and professional development for PK-12 educators. Prior to her time with the Superintendent of Schools office, she served as an administrator in the Pleasant Ridge School District, and also as a middle school teacher in the San Juan Unified School District. Shar and her husband live in Grass Valley and have three grown sons and eight grandchildren.
