Commissioners

Holly Hermansen, Chair
Holly has been Nevada County Superintendent of Schools since August 2007 when she was appointed by the Board of Education. Prior to that she was the Nevada County SELPA Director for three years and was responsible for distributing state and federal funds for the education of students with disabilities. She has also served as Nevada City School District Interim Superintendent, Special Education Director, and Gold Run School principal. Prior to that Holly was program specialist with the Placer Nevada SELPA. After earning her teaching credential from St. Mary’s College and Masters in Special Education from CSU Hayward, she taught in Contra Costa County from 1986 to 1994. She received her Administrative credential from Sacramento State University and a BS in Administration of Justice from CSU Hayward. Holly has two children, Sally and Greg, who are both currently attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. She and her husband Jon reside in Nevada City.

Nikki Riley
Nikki Riley is the Truckee representative for the Nevada County First Five Commission. She lives in Truckee with her husband, Brendan, sons, Dylan and Harlan, and their dog Lulu. She moved to Truckee in 1998 after graduating with high honors from UC Berkeley with a degree in Architecture, emphasizing sustainable design. Nikki served as a Planning Commissioner for the Town of Truckee from January 2003 to March 2007. She recently ended a three year stint at the Sierra Business Council working as their Director of Program Management. She is a board member for the Mountain Area Preservation Foundation and previously served as a representative for the Truckee Health Challenge 2013, the Truckee Affordable Housing Working Group and the Statewide Watershed Program Commission. Nikki is a LEED Accredited Professional who is currently working as a designer/fabricator with the Mountain Forge in Truckee.

Jeffrey S. Brown, MPH, MSW
Jeff has been Nevada County's Health and Human Services Agency Director since June 2005, overseeing agency operations, including the programs of the Public Health, Behavioral Health and Social Services departments. Previously, Jeff worked for 11 years with Alameda County, last serving as the Director of the Health Department’s Community Health Services Division, where he was a leader in the development of the department’s chronic disease and health promotion programs. He has worked overseas with health agencies in Central America and Africa and served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras. Jeff received his Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from UC Davis and Master's degrees in both Public Health and Social Welfare from UC Berkeley. He resides in the Nevada City area with his wife Nicky and their two children.

Hank Weston
William H. “Hank” Weston was elected in 2007 to serve as the District 4 Supervisor for Nevada County. He served for over 45 years with a number of California fire protection agencies. Hank was hired by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF), initially as a seasonal firefighter, and was promoted through the ranks to eventually become CDF Unit Chief of Nevada, Yuba, Placer, Sierra and Sutter Counties. Following 36 years with CDF, Hank served as Fire Chief for Grass Valley City Fire Department from 1997 to 2006. During his career, Hank’s administrative positions have included a wealth of leadership and management duties, and he has been a member and officer of several professional and community organizations. Additionally, Hank holds a lifetime Community College teaching credential and is a retired peace officer with Advanced POST certification. Hank and his wife, Kandy, live in the Lake Wildwood community. Married 36 years, they have two grown daughters.

Karen Milman, MD, MPH
Dr. Karen Milman has served in the combined position of Director of Public Health/Health Officer for Nevada County since May 2009. Dr. Milman has her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Maryland in English Literature, her Medical Doctorate from the University of Maryland, and her Master of Public Health with a focus in Health Administration and Financing from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She completed her residency at Johns Hopkins University and is Board Certified in General Preventive Medicine and Public Health.
